Alpha Yaya Diallo -
The Rogue's 19th Birthday Party
Event Date: Saturday May 13th, 8pm
St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)
Tickets $23, $20 members/students
Guitarist and singer Alpha Yaya Diallo, from Guinea in West Africa, is one of the hottest acts on the current world music scene. Now based in Vancouver, Canada, he's earned a matchless reputation internationally for the excellence of his musicianship and the excitement of his live shows - whether performing solo or with his band Bafing. Diallo is a uniquely multi-talented artist. His dexterous acoustic and electric guitar-playing, with its fluid melodic lines and compelling grooves, places him in the front ranks of African axemen. In addition he is a skilled and experienced performer on a variety of percussion instruments, and on the balafon (traditional wooden xylphone). To complete the abundance of riches Diallo writes his own compositions, and sings with a supple and beautifully modulated voice.
Alpha will perform with his acoustic trio. His latest CD is the magnificent Juno-winning album, Djama (Jericho Beach Music)

Oscar Wilde's Salome
Event Date: May 17 - May 28, 2006
Leaky Heaven, Vancouver's wildly successful and somewhat bent original circus
theatre is gearing up for an East-Side beer parlour version of Oscar Wilde's
passionate classic Salome. Join them for a drink as they take a sharp left turn from their circus origins and collide with German cabaret in a Wilde East Van version of the Biblical story. Crowd favorites and Leaky Heaven veterans Lois Anderson (as the teen-age Salome) and Peter Anderson (as her pushy mother Herodias) are sure to breath crooked life into an already over the top story. How far will she go to kiss the lips of a saint? How far will he go to resist temptation? Lust, murder, and really bad parenting are at the Russian Hall for Leaky Heaven in Salome, May 17 28, 2006.
